Pruning a Japanese-Style Garden

A Japanese-influenced garden is almost always built on uneven land. It usually features running water and distinctive, small trees that greatly resemble very old, full-size trees.

The skillful pruning process that makes this kind of landscaping possible is similar to that used on bonsai plants grown in shallow dishes (see chapter 14 for more details). If you were to shear a 5-foot Colorado blue spruce in the usual manner, it would be an attractive, stiff, formal specimen. However, a similar 5-foot tree grown and pruned in the Japanese method can resemble a 100-foot spruce that has been growing for a century or more on a windswept Colorado mountaintop.
